The New iPhone X Launched with Face ID, and No Home Button

The long-awaited and extensively leaked special edition iPhone is finally upon us, and it’s called the iPhone X (pronounced “iPhone 10”). This new super flagship phone from Apple features an edge-to-edge screen with a notch at the top to accommodate the front-facing camera and new Face ID sensors. Apple CEO Tim Cook teased the introduction of the new device with the following words:

Face ID

It remains to be seen whether Apple’s FaceID will be as convenient as TouchID (it already failed on stage), but at the very least we can’t accuse Apple of not dedicating enough hardware to the task. The front of the new iPhone X has a full-on depth-sensing system much like that of the original Kinect.

The prominent cutout on top hides more than a selfie camera — it has a pair of infrared blasters that locate your face even in the dark and project a network of dots onto it. An IR-sensitive camera watches how those dots are distorted and reflected on your face, producing a detailed 3D mesh.

The iPhone X has glass on both the front and the back, and it has “surgical-grade” stainless steel around the sides. It is water-resistant and comes in two colors: space gray and silver. It also has the highest pixel density (458ppi) display ever in an iPhone, with Apple calling it a Super Retina display. It measures 5.8 inches in diagonal size and has a resolution of 2436 x 1125. It’s the first OLED display in an iPhone, which Phil Schiller explains bluntly: it’s “the first OLED display great enough to be in an iPhone.” Like the iPhone 8, the iPhone X also has True Tone display technology.

Camera

The iPhone X has dual 12-megapixel rear cameras, and it’s equipped with dual optical image stabilization. The sensors are both larger and faster, according to Apple, and the main camera has an f/1.8 aperture while the telephoto lens has an f/2.4 aperture. The iPhone X has good cameras. Both 12MP like on the 8 Plus, but a faster telephoto lens, which also gains optical image stabilisation.

The flash is also improved, but some things you can never really fix, and one of those is a camera flash placed right next to the lens. Just find better lighting, people.
In between the two cameras is a quad-LED True Tone flash with a supposedly twice the uniformity of light. The new phone also has stereo speakers.

iPhone X pricing and availability

The phone will start shipping 3 November for $999 for the 64GB, and it can be pre-ordered on 27 October. The iPhone SE also has a price cut to $349, iPhone 6S to $449, and iPhone 7 to $549.
